Special Report: Frivolous 911 Calls
They often make people laugh but they're nothing to laugh about. They're frivolous calls to 9-1-1.
Every time we hear these calls, they're hard to believe, but they're actually costing time and money keeping operators busy when emergencies really do happen.
Telecommunicates in Henderson County answer thousands of emergency calls every year, but every now and then, phones at 911 ring with something other than an emergency.
Director of communications, Lisha Stanley says 911 operators get all kinds of calls that are far from emergencies.
Lisha Stanley, Director of Communications, "it's not at all unusual for us to receive these frivolous or kind of crazy 911 calls."
From calls about a poorly made subway sandwich to calls for a cab ride home, emergency officials say the frivolous calls are no laughing matter.
"This is kind of a waste of time in a lot of cases and it's taking away, using precious resources that we could be using for people that really need help."
Emergency officials know they have to be ready for anything and train for even these types of calls, but they'd rather use their time for real emergencies instead.
