Update: Asheville Suspect Standoff
UPDATE: The Asheville Police department arrested 41 year-old Lamonte Monsanto just before 10:20 this morning (1/3/14), following a nearly 24 hour stand off at 27 Max Street. Monsanto was transported to Mission Hospital for treatment of possible hypothermia.
On January 2, 2014, the Asheville Police Department responded to 27 Max Street to investigate an incomplete 911 call. After interviewing several neighbors in the apartment building, it was found that another resident, Lamonte Monsanto, 41, had discharged several rounds from a handgun in the back yard of the building and then retreated into his apartment.
The officers made numerous attempts to contact Monsanto, but were unsuccessful. The other residents of the building were evacuated, and then Monsanto opened the door in order to push his girlfriend outside. He then closed the door once again.
APD's Emergency Response Team and Crisis Negotiation Team have been on the scene for several hours attempting to negotiate a safe resolution.
Neighbors watched the drama unfold. Police evacuated people who live closest to where this standoff is happening.
As the night wore on, police say they saw Monsanto moving inside the house. They tried to send in a bomb squad robot, but the hallways of the house were too narrow for it to fit. So they have to wait.
Late Thursday night, Buncombe County Deputies took over for Asheville Police officers so they can get some rest.
