The worst of the wintry weather is behind us, but road crews are on standby tonight.
It was a slick start to the morning. Fluffy snow was falling fast in most mountain counties. It piled up in the higher elevations. Haywood County schools played it safe and called it quits after lunch. The hardware store was busy with customers who were prepping to play it safe. NCDOT crews hustled to put down salt and sand.
In Yancey County, slick roads caused a minor accident on Jacks' Creek Road in Burnsville. Buncombe County was more of the same. Crews couldn't pre-treat the roads because of early morning rain, so conditions were slick.
As the sun went down so did the temperature. By 8 p.m. it hovered just below freezing and was dropping by the minute. Wet roads turned slick and traffic slowed down. Drivers say conditions got worse as the night went on.
NCDOT says they have crews monitoring the road conditions tonight. They are salting and sanding the roads, but say its important for drivers to slow down when things start to get icy.
