Boosting Economy Helping Job Market

Finding jobs is the focus for thousands of people in the mountains today and they are gathered in one place trying to do just that.

The 8th Annual Homecoming Job Fair is going on right now at the WNC Ag Center in Fletcher.

It's estimated somewhere between 2,000 and 3,000 people will be on hand to talk with representatives from 94 companies.

They are businesses ranging from manufacturing, to health care, to law enforcement and a whole lot in between.

The fair comes at a time when unemployment has fallen to a five-year low in the Asheville-metro area, about 5.5-percent.

Organizers say that means the economy is picking-up and many companies are looking to hire.

Tim Lampkin, Economic Development Coalition, "it's a strong year for us, this the most employers that we've ever had.. we're real excited about that and the most open jobs we're ever had."  Tim goes on to say, "we have a history of a lot of hires being made at the job fair, and we're seeing a lot of good conversations going on, a lot of booths have lines right now."

We're told a survey done among the employers represented here indicates there could be as many as 2,000 jobs opening-up within the next six-weeks, some of those today.

The fair is obviously a busy place right now and remains open until 3pm this afternoon.

You don't need an appointment, but bring plenty of resumes.
