•  WLOS :: Health Care Reform
A new White House report claims Maine families are facing such a hardship when it comes to health care costs. That change is not only needed but necessary. The analysis found that in ten years, health premiums for families in Maine increased 120 percent, while wage growth was just 35 percent. The data was released by the Kaiser Foundation and is being used by the White House to support a plan to overhaul the nation's health care system. That plan includes a so-called public option, a government run insurance plan, that the Obama administration says will be more affordable and will help drive down costs. But, private insurers warn With a public option, you could actually see your premiums go up. Private insurers make for an easy target, with many of them raking in hundreds of millions of dollars in profits each year. And in a prime time speech, President Obama wasn't shy about taking aim, saying his plan to reform health care in America will help keep the insurance industry honest. Bruce Bullen, the interim C.E.O. of Harvard Pilgrim, a not-for-profit insurance company out of Massachusetts, is concerned the public option will create an unlevel playing field in which private insurers would have to pick up part of the cost. That means higher premiums, in effect forcing insurers to price themselves out of the market and pushing everyone into the public option. Senators Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins say change won't happen if the public option remains in the plan, because they say it simply doesn't have enough support in Congress.Insurance Companies Speak Out On Health Care Debate
